Larni

I sat on the veranda with a cup of coffee in my hand and a piece of toast on the other. It was three o’clock in the afternoon, but I was still on my first meal of the day. Max had left for his meeting and promised to return before dinner. That man had the stamina of a horse. How could he manage to go to his meeting after all those rounds we had last night?

The ring in my finger reflected the light from the sun. I raised my hand to look at the ring closer. It was my first time to look at it. I did not want to be a hypocrite, but the ring was not the reason I accepted the proposal. What a proposal, too! The edges of my lips curved into a smile as I remembered Max’s proposal. Every young girl dreamed of that moment where a prince-like lover drops on his knee and proposes with a diamond ring. I got the ring, but my man proposed on top of me and in nude.

I did not know what got into me last night. Being with Max was already putting my life, my Dad’s and Max’s life in danger. I should have refused his proposal, but I could not go against my heart. But, I forgot all my fears and my concerns when he proposed last night. The look in his eyes was different that it felt safe to take a risk on a future with him.

My happiness overwhelmed me that I was not scared that everything between us was moving faster than expected. It must be what Nana told me when I was young. Souls that were promised for each other will always find each other. Nana must be guiding me well for I was certain that I had found the soul that was promised for me. Max.

I stopped daydreaming when my phone rang. I ran back to the room and grabbed my phone. It was Mica. She had become an avid fan of my romance with Max and she was probably wanting to hear about us. I looked at my ring and wondered how she would freak out when she heard about my engagement.

“Damn, girl. You’re FAMOUS!” Mica declared as soon as I answered the phone.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Mica was in disbelief that I knew nothing about the news. She read a headline from a paparazzi site about an actress being officially dumped. There was a picture of Max buying a ring a week ago and everyone believed that it was for the actress associated with him. Max had cleared the issue with me. The actress was only riding on the publicity, but nothing was true between them. Call me a fool, but I believed Max. I believed in his love and in the way he showed it to me.

“But, Mr. Buttons showed up with a beautiful young lady in his building last night,” Mica continued to read. “The lady was said to be the mysterious girl he bought from a charity auction.
